The best screen protection for your iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

Updated: March 2017

The new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are as gorgeous and capable as ever, but they still have one big flaw — their screens are still way too easy to scratch and crack! In this article, we’ll show you all the ways you can protect your screen, from simple screen protectors to sprays, cases and complete covers. We’ll start with the most protective options, and work our way down.

1. Recommended: Tempered glass screen protectors

My personal favourite when it comes screen protection is a tempered glass screen protector. These slim slabs of glass offer incredible scratch protection, and they’re both easier to install and longer-lasting than film-based screen protectors. That’s reflected in their slightly higher price, but it’s well worth it.

Tempered glass screen protectors have become massively popular over the past year, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Our recommended tempered glass screen protector for the iPhone 7 is the Olixar Edge to Edge, which has a proved a real hit with our customers.

2. Cases with built-in screen protectors

One of the easiest and most effective options to protect your iPhone’s screen is a case that just includes a built-in screen protector. These are often found in tough cases, which also tend to boast excellent drop protection and sometimes even water resistance. Here are a selection of our favourites:

You can also pick up cases that are essentially full-body screen protectors, like the Olixar FlexiCover below:

3. Flip / folio cases

If you want good screen protection without a screen protector, why not pick up a flip cover or folio case? These types of cases completely cover the screen while the phone isn’t in use, helping to prevent scratches and cracks. They’re a little bulkier than cases without covers, but the added screen protection can be worth it. You’ll also often find convenient credit card slots, stands and other helpful features in cases like this.

4. Film-based screen protectors

When you say ‘screen protection’, this is what most people will think of: a slim piece of plastic film, designed to take scratches and other damage so your screen won’t have to. These screen protectors are cheap to buy and add minimal bulk, but recently more durable tempered glass screen protectors have come to the fore. Still, these screen protectors boast incredible value for money.

5. Cases with a raised lip

If you don’t want the hassle of installing a screen protector (or asking a friend with steady hands to do it), then choosing a case with a raised lip around the screen is a good next-best step. As long as the case extends beyond the screen by a few millimetres, you should be able to avoid any direct impacts. The lip also means that your phone’s screen won’t be scratched by sand or other fine objects if you run it face-first over a surface. This isn’t perfect protection, but it definitely makes a big difference.

6. Screen coating sprays

Finally we have screen coating sprays, like this example from Cleanseal. These offer no impact protection, but they can help prevent minor scratches and keep your screen looking clean and shiny. If you want to use a completely naked iPhone, this is your best option. It also complements our later methods well, by helping keeping screen protectors and cases clean too.
