Griffin’s new USB-C charger returns MagSafe to the MacBook

One of the biggest surprises of the new MacBook was its ports — or rather, its lack of them. The new laptop from Apple has only two ports: one 3.5mm headphone jack and one USB Type-C port. This single USB-C port is responsible for pretty much everything: adding peripherals, connecting to monitors, and even charging.

That means that the new MacBook is the first Apple laptop in a long time to dispense with the firm’s popular ‘MagSafe’ magnetic charging cable — and that’s leaving owners feeling a bit worried. Now, if you trip over your power cable, you may very well end up bringing your MacBook to the ground with a crash instead of the cable falling out with a carefree pop.

Thankfully, USB-C is an open standard, and Griffin have stepped up with an alternative charging solution. Their BreakSafe charger incorporates the same basic design as Apple’s MagSafe, with a two-piece unit that’s held together magnetically. Yank at the cable, and it’ll detach painlessly, leaving your MacBook in position and undamaged.

The breakaway mechanism is a clever one, and it’s almost surprising that Apple didn’t implement something like this themselves. The charger nub is a little longer than Apple’s, but the peace of mind it brings is definitely worthwhile.

And it’s not just the MacBook that would benefit either — you could easily use the same charger with another laptop that uses USB-C for charging, like Google’s 2015 Chromebook Pixel or HP’s Spectre X2.
