Redditor installs Qi wireless charging on his Nexus 6P

pT4U51PReddit user /u/rustid impressed the Android community on Friday with his latest project: adding wireless charging to the Nexus 6P. The work doesn’t look the cleanest — thanks to protruding wires on the back of the case and an upside-down Wireless Charger notice — but it works, and that’s what counts.

The enterprising Nexus fan chose to keep the coil on the outside of the phone due to the phone’s metal back, which of course would block wireless charging.

He hasn’t noticed any issues with the installation thus far, and his installation method — drilling a small hole through the back of the case for the wires, then attaching to the USB header — allows the USB-C port to be used as normal.

CnTI2pzThe whole installation is kept safe under a Spigen Nexus 6P case, so it doesn’t look any different to a standard cased 6P.

We don’t recommend that you try this yourself, as USB-C wireless charging adapters should be available before too long. That removes the need to drill through the back of the phone, and is an altogether safer affair. Still, we salute /u/rustid for his ingenuity!
