Sony Xperia Z2 announced at MWC, coming to Mobile Fun sim-free

The Sony Xperia Z2 has been announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The phone is Sony’s next big flagship smartphone, and offers a nice full-size alternative to the more diminutive Z1 Compact that was released last month.

The Z2 focuses on eliminating the (relatively few) flaws of its predecessor, with an improved display, front-facing speakers, 4K video recording and additional internal improvements. The better points of the Z1 have remained, including the waterproof glass body in white or black, the 20.7 megapixel camera and the latest version of Android (4.4).

Probably the biggest weakness of the Xperia Z1 was its 5-inch 1080p display, which suffered from poor colour reproduction and limited viewing angles, compared to other 5-inch 1080p displays on the Galaxy S4, Nexus 5 and others. This has been fixed in the Xperia Z2, with a new 5.2-inch IPS display providing much better viewing angles and what Sony claims is the widest colour gamut on the market.

The body of the Xperia Z2 doesn’t look much different to its predecessor, but does include one well-regarded addition: The speakers previously at the bottom of the device are now mounted on the front, making for a much better aural experience.

Internally, there are some differences between the Z1 and the Z2. The Snapdragon 800 processor is now a Snapdragon 801 processor (“it’s one louder”), 2 GB of RAM have become 3 GB, and the 3000 mAh battery now has a capacity of 3200 mAh.

The final improvement comes in the camera department; thanks to the capabilities of the new 801 chipset, 4K video recording at 30fps and 720p slow-motion recording at 120fps are both now supported.

The Xperia Z2 looks like a strong improvement over its predecessor, shoring up its weaknesses and continuing its strengths. The phone will be released in March, and will arrive at Mobile Fun soon. To place your pre-order, visit the product pages below.

We also have a large range of Xperia Z2 accessories already on the site, and we’ll have more to come in the days and weeks ahead.
