The Sony Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact come with ‘fast’ chargers out of the box, but what does that actually mean? What chargers should you look for if you want maximum speed charging? Let’s answer those questions now.

What charger do the Xperia XZ and X Compact come with?

The Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact both come with a Sony UCH20 charger, shown above, which is only a 1.5A charger.

However, both phones can charge at a much faster rate with more advanced chargers that support Qualcomm Quick Charge, like Sony’s own UCH12W.

What’s Quick Charge?

Quick Charge is Qualcomm’s standard for rapid charging. It can use Micro USB or USB-C connectors, and the latest 2.0 and 3.0 standards can charge at a maximum rate of 18W — which works out to be 2A at 9V.

That means you can get 5.5 hours of use from only 10 minutes of charging, minimising the time you’ll need to be connected to a charger. If you’re charging overnight this doesn’t really matter, but it makes all the difference if you’re topping up during the day.

The difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is efficiency; 3.0 isn’t any faster, but it is “38% more efficient” than the previous version. That means less energy will be lost as heat, potentially lengthening the useful life of your battery.

What other chargers can I use with the Xperia XZ and X Compact?

Promate 8.4A Triple Port Fast Car Charger

Any USB charger will charge your phone, but the fastest ones will be labelled as being Quick Charge 2.0 or Quick Charge 3.0 compatible. Quick Charge 3.0 is preferred thanks to its cooler operation, but both will work at the same speed.

You can find our Quick Charge 3.0 and 2.0 chargers via the buttons below, including wall chargers, car chargers and more.

  1. The P+ 2.0 is the Pump Express from MediaTek. If I am not wrong Sony has a few models with the MediaTek P10 processors in their phone.

  2. You’re not just lucky (or crazy). I bought a Xperia X Compact in mid-December and mine also came with the Sony UCH12 charger. It has the Qualcomm “Q3” logo next to the USB port. I haven’t figured out what the “P+ 2.0” logo is referring to.

  3. This is very weird.. Doubted my sanity so I checked mine for the 3rd time and yes, the one that came in the box with my XZ is definitely a UCH12…. so I am the lucky one but someone should take this up with Sony. They are advertising these phones as having the great new fast-charge capability but that falls very flat (excuse the pun!) if they are supplying the low-power charger with some of the phones…. also very disappointing as these chargers cost almost £50 to buy separately. I don’t see how the supplier makes a difference, but out of interest I received mine as an upgrade from O2 just before Christmas so have only had it about 2 weeks. Would be interesting to know what CPW would say if you asked. Guess they would say the contents of the box are up to Sony.

  4. Interesting. Yes maybe they have changed it. I double-checked my one and it definitely says UCH12 not UCH20 although the writing is incredibly difficult to read as it’s almost the same colour as the charger itself. It does seem to charge the XZ a fair bit faster as compared to my previous setup which was an Xperia Z5 with standard Sony charger.

  5. Hmm, we definitely got a UCH20 charger with our launch XZ; that’s why this article was written in the first place. Perhaps they changed it at some point? Thanks for letting us know!

  6. Yes, as I said in my post, my Sony Xperia XZ (only received last week) came with UCH12 charger in the box. The article says it comes with UCH20 but that wasn’t the case with mine. Obviously I have no idea whether Sony would pack some XZ;s with better chargers and some not, but that sounds unlikely, I’d have thought?

  7. Hello, a very useful article in many ways, so thanks for that .. however one asspect was very misleading! You state that the Xperia XZ “comes with UCH20 charger” (which is a cheaper charger and doesn’t take full advantage of the phone’s fast charge capability). Upon reading this my initial reaction was fury with Sony for being so cheapskate as to put a lower powered charger in the box (as the phone was NOT cheap!) I was just about to write an incandescent message complaining to Sony but then thought I’d better just check the exact model of charger supplied in the box….. it is NOT a UCH20 it IS a UCH12!!! Where did you get your information? Regards, Stephen
