Note 7 screen gets scratched more easily than Note 5

As we mentioned earlier this week, the Galaxy Note 7 comes with brand new Corning Gorilla Glass 5. This new glass is more shatter-resistant than ever before, but it turns out that comes at a cost: the new glass scratches way more easily than the previous versions, thanks to its use of a softer and more flexible material.

That’s demonstrated perfectly in a ‘torture test’ performed by popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything. In the test, the Note’s screen is scratched by materials of different hardness values on the Mohs scale, where 1H is the softest (talc) and 10H is the hardest (diamond). He starts with materials at a hardness rating of 2 (2H) and going all the way up to a hardness rating of 9 (9H). Take a look at the test video embedded below:

The Galaxy Note 5, the previous model with Gorilla Glass 4, only started to accrue scratches at 6H, which is roughly equivalent to a well-made knife blade. In contrast, the Note 7 is scratched all the way back at 3H, meaning it could be scratched by a copper penny. It’ll also be scratched by iron, steeel, nickel, other kinds of glass and so on.

It’s a disappointing result, and really underscores the need for care with the Note 7. Remember to keep your Note 7 in its own pocket, without your keys, coins or other objects inside. You should also consider picking up either a Note 7 screen protector, preferably a tempered glass model with a 9H rating, or a Note 7 flip case in order to protect the screen.
