How to use Micro USB cables & accessories with Note 7

The Note 7 is a marvel of modern smartphone engineering, with a bright and beautiful screen, powerful innards and even the new USB-C connector. Yet while USB-C does have its advantages, what are you supposed to do with the decades-worth of Micro USB cables and accessories you’ve accrued? Just throw them out? Not likely! Instead, you can keep using your existing cables and accessories using a USB-C to Micro USB adapter.

Olixar Micro USB To USB-C Adapter

These are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but our favourite is the Olixar Micro USB to USB-C adapter shown below. This tiny adapter allows you to use Micro USB cables and accessories easily on your Note 7 and other USB-C devices. This is great for making use of car chargers and desktop chargers, although it may make your Note a little too tall to be used in some docks or speaker stands — use common sense!

You might prefer another adapter, like the official version made from Samsung. This comes in white instead of black, but is functionally identical to the Olixar unit and a little more expensive. Still, you might prefer to stick with official accessories, so it’s worth mentioning at least.

USB-C Compliant Cables

Of course, all of our USB-C cables and adapters are tested to make sure they’re compliant with the specification, so you shouldn’t face any issues.

Gear VR: a rare exception

Official Samsung Galaxy Gear VR Headset for USB-C & Micro USB

There’s one place a USB-C to Micro-USB adapter won’t fit: inside the old Samsung Gear VR headset. This virtual reality headset is cutting edge, but it just won’t accomodate the Note 7. Instead, you’ll need to pick up Samsung’s second-generation model, which is available for pre-order now at Mobile Fun.

As a bonus, the second-gen Gear VR is backwards compatible with Micro USB devices, thanks to a handy insert. That includes the Note 5, S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+. So you could sell your existing Gear VR headset to a friend with one of these phones, and get the new version for yourself without losing any compatibility.

Moving to USB-C

Of course, using an adapter is always going to be a little more fiddly than using native USB-C equipment. You’ll have to go down that route sooner or later, so if you do decide on it then be sure to check out our full range of USB-C cables, adapters and accessories.
