iPhone 7 case leaks reveal dual camera, Smart Connector, no 3.5mm

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are coming soon, so it’s no surprise that cases for the phones are beginning to make an appearance online. Whether made according to rumours or with real insider knowledge, these case renders via 9to5Mac can show what features we expect to see in September when Apple holds its next iPhone event.

The first thing shown prominently is the dual camera system expected to arrive with the iPhone 7 Plus. Two lenses are shown side by side, with a bit of a gap that could allow for a limited 3D view. Along the same line, you can also see the flash module and a rear microphone.

These case photos also show the (sometimes) rumoured Smart Connector, a data-and-charging magnetic connector that Apple used to connect keyboard cases to the iPad Pro. There isn’t much call for a keyboard case on a 5.5-inch iPhone, but it could be used for a case with a battery or speaker inside.

Having a second option to charge the iPhone, leaving the Lightning connector free, could be increasingly important if Lightning headphones become the new norm. With 3.5mm expected to be on the way out, that could well be the case — and there’s certainly no headphone jack shown in these renders.

The iPhone could see some internal changes too. The A9 chip in the iPhone 6S will be replaced with an A10 chip, which should boost both CPU and GPU performance. The Plus model has also been rumoured to move from 2 to 3GB of RAM, which has been floated as a requirement for processing images taken with the dual camera. Finally, waterproofing has long been rumoured, and may finally be properly announced with the iPhone 7.
