Moto Z and MotoMods appear in leaked photos

Lenovo Tech World is kicking off in about two weeks, where the Chinese company are expected to announce a pair of new Motorola flagships. As we reported earlier, these flagships are expected to be called the Moto Z instead of the Moto X, and they’ll feature modular backplates called MotoMods. Of course, this being the internet, photos of both the phones and the mods have leaked ahead of schedule by Evan Blass of Venture Beat. Take a look!

This photo shows the back of the Moto Z, likely the higher-spec Moto Z Style version instead of the more mid-range Moto Z Play. The device shown has a metal back in three colours—black, silver, gold—with a subtle banded texture. The camera has a ‘flat tire’ design familiar to Moto 360 owners, with the flash tucked into the bottom of the circle. Sixteen magnetic pins adorn the bottom of the back, allowing the MotoMods to be attached. There’s a Motorola logo in the centre, with a Droid moniker below the camera lens; this must be a photo of the Moto Z Style for Verizon in the United States.

The photo of the MotoMods is even more interesting. It shows a trio of potential backplates, with the top one resembling a full camera setup with a large Xenon flash unit, optical zoom and a red shutter button. The middle MotoMod appears to be an extended battery backplate with a kickstand, and the one on the far left could be a pico projector MotoMod. It’s impossible to know for sure until the phone is announced, but already Motorola seem to offer more convincing modular add-ons than LG has with the G5.

We’ll get our answers on June 9th. Until then, stay tuned for the latest mobile news, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!
