Moto X will be rebranded to Moto Z for 2016 models

Last week we reported that Lenovo is working on two new Moto X smartphones, codenamed Vertex and Vector Thin. Today, we have a new report from Evan Blass of Venture Beat, which suggests that the company will drop the Moto X name in favour of a new letter: Moto Z.

According to Blass, the high-end Vector Thin will be called the Moto Z Style and the mid-range Vertex will get the Moto Z Play moniker. There may also be a Verizon-specific model of both phones, which will be called ‘Droid Edition’ without the usual Turbo or Maxx suffixes.

Both phones will sport a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, although the Style gets a 1440p resolution and the Play will stay at 1080p. Specifications will also differ between the two handsets, with the Style getting a Sanpdragon 820 processor and 16-megapixel camera, and the Play getting a Snapdragon 652 CPU and a 13-megapixel rear shooter. On the other hand, the Play will come with a more capacious battery, which could make it a better choice for those of us that like to stay away from a power outlet for extended periods. The Venture Beat report also suggests that the phones’ modular backs have been renamed, and will be called MotoMods rather than Amps (although I prefer that Mass Effect-inspired name). The MotoMods are said to include stereo speakers, an external battery, a different colour cover and a camera grip attachment, among others. It’s not clear if Motorola will open up MotoMods to third-party manufacturers (and whether those third parties will even be interested), but they should have a much wider range of accessories than LG’s G5 and Friends.
