The best fishing apps

Fishing remains one of the most popular sports in the UK, and as we approach slightly warmer weather and the fishing season we thought we’d take a look at some of the best apps which can improve your fishing experience.

1. Fishing Knots – Android

Fishing-Knots

We kick off with a handy app for helping you bind your fishing knots (aptly named Fishing Knots). It’s a relatively straightforward app with a database of nicely illustrated step-by-step tutorials for attaching your baits, which you can quickly refer to when you’re waterside.

2. FishBrain – Android, iOS

Fishing is nothing without being able to share your experience with fellow fishers, which is why FishBrain is a great app to have on your smartphone. It’s the largest social fishing network in the world, allowing you to find out what’s been caught in your area (and exactly where), find new fishing locations and record your catches on the community database where you can view statistics on a huge number of species and baits.

3. FishHunter Pro – Android, iOS (requires FishHunter device)

If you want to give yourself a serious advantage over your fishing peers then you should definitely give the Fish Hunter your consideration. This isn’t strictly just an app, as it uses a portable ‘Directional 3D’ device which you can drop up to 160 feet below water level to hunt for nearby fish. Through the iOS or Android app, the device reveals key location information through a combination of Directional Casting, 3D bottom contouring and mapping to help you up your catch rate. A real gamechanger.

4. Fishing & Hunting Solunar Time – Android

Once you’ve got the tools to know where to fish all that’s left is to find the best time to fish, and that’s where Fishing & Hunting Solunar Time comes in. It gives an accurate forecast of major and minor activity periods, moon and sun rising and setting time and a 5-day weather report. You can even save your favourite locations to quickly get forecasts for your regular fishing spots.

5. Ninja Fishing – Android, iOS

Ninja-Fishing

Ok so this one isn’t going to help you catch anything out on the lakes but we like to include a game in these roundups and Ninja Fishing is our pick here. It’s an instantly addictive fishing game that uses your phone’s tilt controls to reel in as many fish as you possibly can. There’s plenty of depth to keep you hooked for a while (sorry), so install at your own risk if you want to find time to actually fish – or hold down a full time job.

Those are our top five fishing apps to get you started. If you’re a keen fisher and think we’ve missed something, let us know!

  1. I love Spyglass app. This is an amazing app to have on a boat. It works as a ship’s compass, a bearing compass and sextant, as well as a GPS. It makes a great introduction to celestial navigation, and it is accurate enough to be a seriously useful tool.
