Smartphones due in 2016

If you’re considering a new smartphone, you may want to hold fire for now as there are some pretty exciting launches planned for 2016. Here’s what you can expect to see next year.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge

Galaxy-S7

Likely to arrive earlier in the year than its predecessors, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is expected to be announced at a global event in February. Rumours suggest that there will be two models, the Galaxy S7 and a larger Galaxy S7 Edge with a 5.7” screen. We’re not yet clear on specs, but it’s widely believed Samsung’s new flagship will feature USB Type-C charging, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 processor and will once again have Micro SD storage. Leaked case renders from accessory manufacturer Olixar suggest some subtle design changes too.

Apple iPhone 6C

iPhone-6C

We can expect to see the iPhone 6C announced at Apple’s next event in March 2016. The 6C will be smaller than the current 6 and 6S models, with a 4 inch screen as opposed to 4.7 inches. It will be a stripped back and more affordable version of the 6 and 6S with features such as 3D Touch left out, but the Apple A9 processor will be present and we can expect a metal finish rather than the plastic that was used on the 5C.

Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Apple’s iPhone release schedule is pretty common knowledge these days. Every other year we see a new number which brings with it a new design and between that we see the S upgrades which focus on internal improvements. September 2016 will see the launch of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus so expect a new design, a higher resolution display, and maybe even full waterproofing.

Sony Xperia Z6

Xperia-Z6

In recent years, Sony has been announcing a new flagship phone every six months, with the Xperia Z5 released just a couple of months back in October, following the Z3+ in May. Following this pattern will be the Xperia Z6 set to be announced at the Mobile World Congress in February 2016. Sony are expected to retain the waterproofing and fingerprint scanner from the Z5 and don’t be surprised to see a 4K UltraHD display as the main attraction.

HTC One M10

Many anticipated the HTC One M10 to be announced in October of this year but instead the company released the more mid-range HTC One A9. We shouldn’t have to wait too long though, with an announcement earmarked for March 2016, just before MWC. One would predict a familiar metallic finish with an improved display after the M9 was found wanting against rivals with its full as opposed to Quad HD screen.

LG G5

LG-G5

We’re looking forward to see what the LG G5 will bring. While LG aren’t traditionally the first to innovate when it comes to top-end smartphone specs, they’re developing a knack of offering high performance phones at attractive price points. Early rumours suggest an iris scanner, a full 4K display and maybe even an increased battery capacity. Loyal LG fans will be hoping that the battery remains removable, while we’re quite interested to see what the official accessories will bring, after the swish leather replacement back covers for the G4.

These are just some of the new smartphones due to arrive in 2016. Are there any we’ve missed that you’re particularly looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!
