Sony makes brilliant Android phones, but its best work is often quite expensive – the Xperia Z2, Z Ultra and Z1 Compact are all £300 or dearer, sometimes many months after release. Thankfully, Sony are now preparing to launch a new Android phone that offers a lot of that same quality at a much lower price point, closer to £200 sim-free. That phone is the Sony Xperia M2, and it’s coming this week to Mobile Fun!
The Xperia M2 looks good for a budget phone, with a big 4.8-inch qHD display and the sleek Sony look that the Japanese company is known for in black or white. The phone is slim at 8.6mm, and is about the same size as the Galaxy S3 and other leading Android handsets.
The phone’s specifications are modest, but sensible. There’s a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage (plus microSD storage of up to 32 GB). In terms of imaging, you can expect a 8 megapixel rear-facer and a front-facing camera for video calls and selfies too. Of course, there’s 4G LTE connectivity as well so you can get super fast speeds across the UK.
Sony have always been one of the better companies when it comes to skinning and customising Android, and it’s no different with the M2. The phone is clad in Sony’s typical Xperia skin, with quite a few theme options if you’d like to change things up. You’ll also get a few custom Android apps, but for the most part these are sensible additions to what Android already offers instead of senseless changes. The base OS underneath is Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and an upgrade to the latest version, 4.4 KitKat, is coming soon.
Above all, the Xperia M2 is just good value. You’ll get a lot of phone for your money, no question, but you’ll also get some added goodies: £50 of free content from Sony, including Michael Jackson’s new Xscape album. It’s a nice finishing touch for a sensible and stylish value smartphone.
