Nokia Lumia 920 makes the Lumia 900 look old school: the two phones compared

This week Nokia and Microsoft finally announced their flagship Windows Phone 8 device, the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone. The phone is a substantial upgrade over previous Lumia models in terms of hardware, as Windows 8 has relaxed hardware restrictions considerably. There are some software changes too, but most of these are just about supporting new hardware!

There are three big hardware upgrades – the display, the CPU and the camera. Let’s have a look at each.

Display

One of the most noticeable upgrades for the Nokia Lumia 920 is the display. The old model, the 900, had a 4.3″ display but a resolution of only 800 x 480, resulting in a pixel density of 217 pixels per inch. The new model increases the screen diagonal to 4.5″, but also boosts the resolution to 1280 x 768. This results in a pixel density of 332 pixels per inch, which is higher than both the Samsung Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S.

CPU

Another important upgrade has been made inside the heart of the phone. The old single-core Snapdragon S2 processor has been replaced by one of the latest Snapdragon S4 dual-core processors, with a 100 MHz boost in clock speed but a massive boost in performance. There’s also a leap from an Adreno 205 GPU to an Adreno 225 one, which again should make games run much faster. We’ll know exactly how much of an advantage this will be closer to release, once journalists have been able to benchmark the Lumia 920.

Camera

The third major upgrade is the rear-facing camera. While we didn’t see the full sensor power of the 41 megapixel Nokia 808 PureView, we do have an 8.7 megapixel PureView branded camera system. The major advantage is optical image stabilisation, a technique for producing much sharper and less blurry images and videos. The front-facing camera has been upgraded to 1.3 megapixels too, putting it on par with other high-end phones.

Other upgrades

There are a swathe of other upgrades too. There’s double the amount of RAM and internal storage; the Lumia 920 now has 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The battery has been enlarged from 1830 mAh to 2000 mAh, boosting the talk time rating to 17 hours of 2G or 10 hours of 3G (from 7 hours). Wireless charging is now supported out of the box, as is NFC.

All in all, it’s an impressive set of upgrades and should make a big difference to the Lumia 920’s image. Going from having the worst display of any manufacturer’s flagship phone to having the best (at least in terms of pixel density) is quite an achievement, and really underscores the way that Windows Phones can now compete against Android and Apple in hardware.

Accessories

Here at Mobile Fun, we’ll be looking to stock the Lumia 920 sim-free as well as a full range of Nokia Lumia 920 accessories. Most notably we’re adding quite a few Nokia Lumia 920 cases, but we’ll also have chargers, screen protectors, covers, car kits and lots more.
