Can I wirelessly charge my tablet?

In short yes, you can wirelessly charge your tablet, however, just because you can doesn’t mean that you should.

Now as you know, tablets don’t really come with wireless charging out of the box, and although you can add it via a wireless charging adapter it doesn’t mean that you should. For a start, tablets have a large battery, which means it takes them a long time to charge even when plugged into the mains. So adding wireless charging into the mix would mean it’d take even longer!

The next thing is the display, tablets have gotten a lot bigger over the years and I doubt that’s going to change. This is important as displays are the main draw on your battery, meaning that you are unlikely going to even charge the battery up if the display is on and you are wirelessly charging your tablet.

Now, while there are some superfast 50W chargers from the likes of OnePlus, and Xiaomi these can only really support those speeds for short periods of time, and will also generate a lot of heat, and when your tablet battery is at least double the size of your phones it means that charging speeds will end up a lot slower than 50W.

Now, this doesn’t mean that no tablet will ever support wireless charging, in fact, the iPad and the new Google Pixel tablet both achieve a very similar thing but with some very small pins instead.

On the side or back of these devices there are 3 little contact points that, with the help of magnets, line up with some pins on either a keyboard or dock that can transmit power and data.

So will we see wireless charging coming to mainstream tablets soon, possibly, but I’ll probably still be plugging in my tablet rather than getting a wireless charger for it.
