Sony Xperia XA Ultra announced: a titanic selfie machine

sm20_black_front.0Sony announced an enormous smartphone this week, the Xperia XA Ultra. The self-described ‘stylish selfie-cam masterpiece’ does have some impressive specifications, as it comes with a massive six inch 1080p display and a powerful 16-megapixel front-facing camera with flash and optical image stablisation. If you ever tire of selfies, there’s also a 21.5-megapixel rear camera with hybrid autofocus.

The phone sports one of the first ‘borderless’ displays we’ve seen from Sony, making the phone smaller than you’d expect given its screen diagonal — it measures just 164 x 79 x 8.4 millimetres and weighs only 190 grams. The glass-wrapped design is available in a nice range of colours too, including black, white and ‘lime gold’ (aka yellow, aka lemon).

Internally, you can expect a mid-range MediaTek MT6755 Helio P10 processor, with eight cores, backed with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage plus Micro SD. You can expect two days of battery life from the modest 2700mAh internal battery, too. Fast charging is also supported via MediaTek’s PumpExpress+ standard, with Sony promising 5.5 hours worth of battery life after ten minutes of charging.  The phone runs Android 6 Marshmallow, with Sony’s usual suite of apps and feature additions.

The Xperia XA Ultra is due to ship later this summer, although UK availaibility has yet to be confirmed. If you’re in the market for a selfie-focused phablet, then this handsome handset could be a sound choice.

We’ve already begun to gather a range of Xperia XA Ultra accessories, so if you pick up the phone then check ’em out!
