5 awesome smartphone concepts: Q1 2016

The Galaxy S7 Edge, LG G5 and iPhone SE have all launched. Now, concept artists are working on what comes next. Here are our favourite concept images and videos, sourced from across the web.

Super widescreen iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 remains a favourite target of concept artists, thanks to the enormous interest in each upcoming iPhone model. This concept from Sonitdac on YouTube is one of the most audacious we’ve ever seen, imagining an iPhone with a flexible screen that wraps all the way around to the rear of the phone. Unfurl it, and you get a widescreen display the likes of which we’ve never seen on a smartphone. It’s a clever idea that relies on next-gen technology to work, and while it’s an impossibility for the iPhone 7, maybe we’ll see something this cool in the medium future. The video is impressive too, take a look:

Tricky Nokia A1 Android phone

This one’s an April Fools prank from Android Authority, but it’s still pretty sweet. The A1 would be Nokia’s first Android smartphone, complete with a brushed texture rear panel that went of style ten years ago and capacitive keys below the modest display. The phone runs Nokia’s Z Launcher (of course), but offers up few other interesting features. Sorry, Nokia fans!

Realistic iPhone 7 concept

We saw a crazy iPhone 7 concept, and now we’ve gotten a more realistic vision. This video from Geert van Uffelen shows the iPhone as it’s been leaked and rumoured, complete with stereo speakers and dual rear cameras. The model also includes a trio of pogo pins to attach accessories, and a design that mimics the earlier iPhone 6 and 6S apart from some new colours like ‘deep black’.

A curvy Samsung Galaxy Note 6

The next flagship from Samsung will be autumn’s Galaxy Note 6, so it’s no surprise that there are a few concepts floating around already. This one is from Metti Farhang, and includes a pretty bodacious curved display, dual rear cameras and a full six-inch 4K display. Of course, Galaxy S7 features like the always-on display make an appearance, too.

The geometric HTC One M11

The HTC 10 is yet to be revealed, but the HTC 11 could be pretty cool if it’s anything like this concept from Marcelo Bahamondez. The phone plumps for a single rear-facing camera of considerable aperture, two front-firing speakers above the screen and a cool geometric design on the rear. There are two models too, with the regular-sized One M11 and the phablet-sized One M11 Fringe.
