Pretty much every household item you can imagine will be available in a ‘smart’ version in the future, and the humble padlock is no different. The Noke is just that, a padlock which can be locked and unlocked remotely using an app on your smartphone.
The Noke is designed to be the simplest electronic device you own, offering security without effort. Just put it in place, and the Noke will automatically unlock when your smartphone is close enough. You don’t even need to take your smartphone out of your bag for it to operate.
As well as working as a normal padlock (albeit with a novel unlocking system), the Noke also has some unique features. You can see where and when your Noke was unlocked. There’s even a map view, perfect for items in transit. You can also share access with your friends, and see when they’ve taken advantage of this functionality. If you have multiple Noke locks, you can set a unique name for each padlock in the app, and track them all separately.
The Noke is sturdy, too. It’s built from steel with boron-hardened shackle, making it incredibly strong and durable. It also incorporates special design features to prevent shims from being used against it, preventing one of the most common avenues preferred by lockpickers.
Its weather-resistant design ensures it can be used indoors or outside, with o-rings protecting the internal components from dust and moisture. The Noke is also made to withstand temperature extremes, from -23 to 65 degrees celsius (-10 to 150 degrees fahrenheit).
The Noke’s 2032 coin battery lasts for over a year, thanks to the use of Bluetooth 4.0 low energy transmissions. You’ll be alerted on the Noke app once you need to change the battery, which you can do in seconds without tools or equipment. If you somehow miss recharging the battery and it goes flat, it’s even possible to jump-start the padlock from an external battery, giving you enough power to open the padlock and install a new battery.
Noke is compatible with iPhone 4S and later, Android 4.3+ and even Windows 10, so you can use it with the vast majority of smartphones, tablets and PCs on the market.
Noke is a great example of how smart goods can provide all of the same functionality as a dumb equivalent, plus a bunch of extra features that simply wouldn’t be possible with a traditional lock.
