Nokia Lumia 550 goes on sale in Europe

Lumia-550-hero-jpgThe Nokia Lumia 550 went on sale in Europe today, bringing the new Windows 10 phone OS to its cheapest handset yet. The SIM-free model is retailing for just £89, a pretty reasonable price considering the specs, hardware and features on board.

The Lumia 550 has a 4.7-inch 720p display; something only afforded to expensive flagship phones a few years ago. It also includes a quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage and a 2100mAh removable battery.

Cameras are a little lacking though, with a 5-megapixel shooter on the back and a 2-megapixel unit up front. The phone is just under 10 millimetres thick, and weighs a hair less than 142 grams. The body of the phone will be familiar to anyone that’s seen a recent Lumia handset, with a comfortable polycarbonate enclosure, rounded corners and a slight camera bump.

While the Lumia 550 lacks some of the fancier features of Windows 10 — like Hello and Continuum — it still has universal Windows apps including Office, Cortana and Skype. Microsoft are also throwing in the Glance Screen, letting you see notifications without needing to unlock your phone first.

Overall, it’s a big step forward compared to earlier Windows Phone 7 and 8 handsets, and redefines what you should expect from a low-end Windows smartphone. The Lumia 550 is available SIM-free and unlocked from Mobile Fun in black; a white colour variant is also available. Of course, we’ll also be providing a full range of Lumia 550 cases and accessories, with many already in stock. See more information on the phone and its accessories via the relevant buttons below:
