Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ announced, here’s what you need to know

Last week we covered Samsung’s announcement of its latest stylus-toting phablet, the Note 5. That phone looks great, but it won’t be available in the UK or indeed wider Europe. Instead, we’re getting another 5.7-inch Samsung phablet: the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Here’s everything you need to know about the big new phone.

When you see the S6 Edge+ in person, you’re stuck by how much this looks like the original S6 Edge, released this spring. The metal and glass design, with a screen that curves down on each side, has merely been scaled up, moving from a screen size of 5.1 to 5.7 inches. That extra 0.6 inches is a small but noticeable increase, but the phone remains easily pocketable thanks to the curvy design. In fact, the Edge+ is nearly the same width and height as two 5.5-inch phones, the iPhone 6 Plus and the OnePlus One, and it’s thinner than both.

The curved screens, glass back and refined edges of the phone are even more stunning at this larger size, but there are some practical benefits as well. The battery has been upgraded from 2600 to 3000mAh, and that allows the phone to reach 1 day of battery life comfortably – something its predecessor couldn’t always claim. Fast wireless charging is another new inclusion, allowing you to recharge from 0 to 100% in just two hours with a compatible Samsung Fast Qi Charger. Of course, fast charging using a Qualcomm Fast Charge 2.0 wired charger is still possible too.

Another improvement is RAM – the S6 Edge+ has a ridiculous 4GB available, compared to the 3GB on the S6 Edge. Otherwise, there’s remarkably little different between the two S6 Edge models, with the same processor, camera, display resolution, storage space, fingerprint reader and more.

That makes for a fast and fluid experience, whether you’re shooting photos, navigating around the Android 5.1 OS, or playing 3D games. There are a few software improvements here; Samsung have added the capability to stream live to YouTube, for instance. You can also access your favourite apps and contacts by swiping in from the curved side of the screen. There’s even a theming engine that can let you return to something that looks almost the same as stock Android – or something much wilder if you prefer.
