Samsung rumoured to be working on advanced Galaxy S6 case

Speculation is rife around Samsung’s Galaxy S6. Their recent press invite does suggest that we’ll see an ‘Edge’ version of their S flagship, but beyond that we don’t know much.

One exciting possibility was floated by Android.com.pl, who suggested that the Galaxy S6 might include an advanced case for the phone which would come with replaceable back panels. Like the Project Ara modular smartphone, these panels would provide additional functionality to the phone.

For example, one panel might include an e-ink display, à la the Yotaphone. That’d allow you to read books and see notifications without using up almost any battery compared to a standard display. The e-ink display might use Samsung’s Nook brand too.

Another intriguing example is a lens panel, which would allow macro, telephoto or coloured lenses to be rotated over the 20-megapixel optically-stabilised rear camera. It goes without saying that this would be a great panel for mobile photographers.

The final example are covers for enhancing the S-Health app – including one that includes a blood sugar sensor and another that integrates with fitness equipment and serves as a bicycle computer.

These replaceable cases sound like they’d be great if they were well-implemented, and would definitely be a good reason to choose the S6 over a competing handset. Samsung have always done well with their first-party cases and accessories, so we’ll just have to stay tuned to see if this Galaxy S6 case rumour turns out to be true!
