Top 10 addictive Windows Phone games

In this article, we’re going to show you ten of the most addictive mobile games for Windows Phone.

1. Skulls of the Shogun

Skulls of the Shogun is a clever turn-based tactics game, rendered in a beautiful Japanese-inspired painted art style. The game is simple to learn but has enough wrinkles to stay interesting. The game boasts multiplayer matches and synced progress between all three Microsoft systems – Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone. Its campaign will keep you busy for a long time, and then there’s the chestnut of multiplayer to consider. A great package for the price, although there’s an argument to be made that the experience is better on larger screens.

2. Super Crossfighter

Super Crossfighter feels like an evolution of Space Invaders or Galaga, a fast-paced shoot-’em-up with a vibrant sci-fi theme. The unique twist is your ability to cross the field of battle in an instant, warping from top to bottom and back to dodge shots or take a new firing position on your alien opponents. There’s a lot to do here too compared to most mobile titles, with 320 levels to beat. It’s a nice side effect of the game having been made for Xbox 360 first, and ported to Windows Phone later.

3. Temple Run 2

Temple Run was the original endless running title that really kicked off the craze on mobile, and its second iteration remains one of the best available. Dodge the hazards of the jungle by swiping and leaning your phone, collecting coins and powerups to set a high score and unlock goodies to make future runs easier. It’s a winning formula, realised with plenty of polish for one of the most addictive games on Windows Phone.

4. Mass Effect: Infiltrator

Mass Effect Infiltrator is a surprisingly fun cover-based shooter for Windows Phone, based on the console and PC sci-fi RPG of the same name. The experience is rather more on the action here, but the setting remains compelling and both controls and graphics are reasonable for a mobile title. Well worth a download.

5. Asphalt 8: Airborne

Asphalt 8 is the latest entry in the series of successful mobile racing games. As usual, you’ll find a large amount of licensed vehicles, plenty of tracks and frantic arcade-style racing. The opponents are none too challenging, but it’s still fun to complete each race and collect all the cash lying around the track. Upgrades come fast and furious, and it’s very easy to keep playing for way too long.

6. Wordament

Wordament is one of the few games on this list that originated on Windows Phone first, then later made it to other platforms. The game is an online multiplayer word search, where you’re competing against everyone else in the world to find the most words in a four by four grid of letters. You’ll need to be incredibly fast to place decently, but thankfully the game is a fun brain-teaser regardless of how high you finish.

7. The Line Football

Endless runners are definitely in vogue in the moment, and one nice option from the category is The Line Football. The game is football (“soccer”, for Americans) themed, and has you guiding a football along a playing pitch and avoiding players trying to kick you. It’s a bit perverse to see a presumably sentient football dodging the players that normally act upon it, but it’s fine nonetheless.

8. Flow Free

Flow Free isn’t the most recently released game, but that’s OK; I’m still playing it. This puzzle game has a simple premise: connect each pair of coloured circles with lines through a grid, without any lines crossing over and without leaving any sector blank. It’s simple enough on the starting 5×5 grids, but it gets increasingly challenging as the grid size moves up to 10×10 and beyond.

9. Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy III is one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made, and now you can relive it on Windows Phone. Like other good console ports, this Windows Phone game has dozens of hours of gameplay, a riveting story and a rather satisfying conclusion. Whether you’ve already played the original or you missed it back in the day, you should definitely try Final Fantasy III.

10. More Here Eye

More Here Eye is like a colour-matching version of Flappy Bird, where you’re tasked with navigating though obstacles by matching their colour. With four colours to switch between and a fast pace, you’ll need to be well-practiced to reach even a double-digit score. Like Flappy Bird, it’s both enraging and addictive, as you’ll be locked into a cycle of starting, dying and restarting as you try to set a new high score.
