Nokia’s Treasure Tag: never lose your keys again

Nokia has always made awesome accessories, but their latest release might be their most useful yet. The Nokia Treasure Tag is a proximity sensor accessory that can be attached to your keychain, letting you track your keys from your Lumia phone*.

Once attached, the Treasure Tag app will show you where your keys are on a map, and can even show you an augmented reality overlay if you’d prefer.

The Treasure Tag works the other way, too. You can press a button on the device in order to make your phone make a noise, as long as you’re within range.

The Treasure Tag works using a combination of Bluetooth and NFC – Bluetooth is used for the actual tracking, while NFC is used for pairing a Tag with your phone quickly and easily. Bluetooth has a a fairly decent range – about 50 metres, depending on the power of the device –  so you’ll be able to find your keys if you lose them on your flat, but you won’t be able to track your keys across town.

The Treasure Tag will be one of the first Bluetooth Low Energy accessories, allowing for some very impressive battery life. Nokia’s saying that the Treasure Tag will be “always on” for about six months, after which the batteries will need to be replaced or recharged.

The Treasure Tag will be available in the next few weeks, once Nokia begins rolling out the Amber update to its Lumia phones, which adds Bluetooth Low Energy support. For the latest pricing and availability information, be sure to have a look at our product page linked below:

Thanks for reading the article, and be sure to let me know what you think of the new accessory!

*All Lumia phone that receive the Amber update should be supported, which should be all Lumias running Windows Phone 8. We may also see a release for Windows Phones from other manufacturers, like HTC and Samsung. It’s also possible that enterprising individuals on Android will be able to write an app for the Treasure Tags, as Android 4.3 also includes support for the Bluetooth LE standard.
