Motorola is trying to get back in the game with the Moto X smartphone

“Moto X: The First Smartphone Assembled in the USA” is the news title on Motorola’s media center.

Motorola is placing all its bets on the Moto X, their new flagship smartphone due to come out in October. It will be designed, engineered and assembled in the United States and more so, according to the manufacturer, this will be  the first smartphone to ever be assembled in the US.

The Google owned company refers to several reasons for doing this including important supply-chain advantages, however, my guess is that an all American smartphone might be more appealing to customers in the USA. This might suggest that Motorola is planning to focus on the North American market first, as part of its aim to claw back a share of the smartphone market.

But will the Moto X be ‘all that’? Well, let’s not forget that Motorola invented the mobile phone back in 1973. This is a company with an extensive background in mobile phone technology and vast expertise in the telecommunications equipment field. What they’ve got planned is big and very different, it is a huge gamble that can either change the way we see the smartphone or fail terribly. So what is it that they are planning to do?

Motorola Moto X

You can blame Motorola for the lack of images. In an interview on Wednesday, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside claimed to have the Moto X in his pocket but apparently we weren’t invited to the party in his pants as he wouldn’t show anyone what the device looks like. Either way, here’s what we know so far:

1. It will be contextually aware meaning that will anticipate your needs and will react differently in different scenarios. Examples include:

  • it will know when and if to fire up the camera when you take it out of your pocket
  • it will act differently you are driving at 60 mph

2. It may run stock Android

3. It will have two processors that will somehow help maximize battery life

4. It will be a ‘budget’ handset. Woodside has specified that the smartphone will be low-cost but high-quality and will range somewhere between features phones that sell for 30$ and high-end devices that go for $650. That leaves quite a margin but we’re assuming he means that it will cost around $300 to $400

That is literally all the information out there at the moment but it’s enough to make us curious. We’re hoping to hear more about the Moto X soon.

Keep in touch.
