Google Nexus 10: We welcome the new tablet with new accessories

Like the Nexus 4, the Nexus 10 is a new tablet from Google. This one is produced in cooperation with Samsung, who have pulled out all of the stops to produce a tablet of impressive quality.

The big feature of the Nexus 10 is its display – 10.1″ diagonal, it boasts a resolution of 2560 x 1600. That’s a lot of pixels – the only place you’d find that resolution before this year is professional 30″ monitors that cost about £1000. Now, we’ve got that same resolution on a tablet display at 300 pixels per inch, ahead of the third generation iPad which is 2048 x 1536 at 9.7″.

Of course, to drive a display of that size you need an equally impressive processor. Here, Google have turned to the Samsung’s Exynos 5250 dual-core processor that runs at 1.7 GHz. That’s a very fast piece of silicon, and backed with 2 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB of storage and a 9,000 mAh battery the tablet will be able to handle anything you throw at it, even at that giant 2560 x 1600 resolution.

The tablet also is equipped with the latest version of Android, 4.2. The new version includes multiple user accounts for tablets like the Nexus 10, a new quick settings tray you can pull down with two fingers from the top of the screen, a Photo Sphere camera mode that produces 360 degree panoramas that you’d find in Google Street View and an improved, more informed version of the Google Now personal assistant. There’s also ‘gesture typing’, a Swype-like way of typing by gliding from letter to letter instead of tapping, which works well with the tablet’s large display.

The hardware of the Nexus 10 is likely to be a little more divisive. Where the iPad is cold and sharp, the Nexus 10 sports a more rounded look, with easy grip plastic that makes it easier to hold onto the tablet with one hand. While that makes it more ergonomic, it doesn’t quite have the looks of the iPad.

Of course, it is much cheaper than the iPad. In the UK, the Nexus 10 costs £319 for the 16 GB version, or £389 for the 32 GB version. It goes on sale on November 13th, directly from Google’s website.

All things considered it looks like the best 10″ tablet on the market at the moment. If you don’t want to get an iPad, then this is by far the best alternative.
