Probably the biggest upgrade is the screen, which moves to the same measurements as the popular Nexus 7: A 7″ display at 1280 x 800, not bad at all. Internally the tablet is impressive too; there’s a new dual-core 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor which should be a bit faster than the Tegra 3 of the Nexus 7. There’s 16 GB of internal storage (double that of the N7) and 1 GB of RAM. The tablet also features a front-facing HD camera, an HDMI port, stereo speakers, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and a laminated touch sensor.
Of course, the big draw of the tablet is at a media consumption device and according to early reports it does not disappoint. The Kindle Fire HD is hooked in tightly to the Amazon ecosystem, with deeply integrated access to books, films, apps and music from Amazon’s stockpiles. The Fire HD is really good at suggesting content too, which certainly plays to Amazon’s strength as a long-tail internet retailer.
