Google Unveil Nexus 7, a £159 tablet

As expected, last night Google unveiled their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean reference device, a 7″ tablet called the Nexus 7. The tablet will cost only £150 in the UK for the base model, but is much more powerful than the similarly priced Amazon Kindle Fire.

The tablet includes a quad-core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz (as seen in the Asus Transformer and the HTC One X), 1 GB of RAM and 8 or 16 GB of internal storage. The tablet’s 7″ display runs at a great resolution, 1280 x 800 – just enough to watch 720p HD films and YouTube. The tablet also looks to have a much more solid chassis than what is typically available on bargain-priced tablets, with a plastic and rubber construction that is both durable and easy to grip.

The Nexus 7 is the first tablet that will run Jelly Bean, which will include a number of improvements over the most recent release, Ice Cream Sandwich. Probably the most interesting is Project Butter, which uses a number of technical innovations to boost frame-rates and decrease lag when moving around Android 4.1 interface, with a goal of having everything running at 60 fps, as smooth as butter.

There are also a number of other additions to the OS, including an improved notifications menu that allows you to take action immediately instead of moving into an app first, an offline voice recognition system, a new lockscreen shortcut to the context-rich Google Now interface, more elegantly resizable and moveable widgets, a new camera UI and Chrome as the default browser.

The tablet will be released in two to three weeks, and can be ordered online via the Play store. The 8 GB version will cost £159, while the 16 GB version will cost £199.  Each will come with £15 of credit for the Play marketplace.

Here at Mobile Fun we’ll have a wide range of Nexus 7 accessories ready for launch. Nexus 7 cases are expected to be some of the most popular, but we’ll also stock equally essential Nexus 7 chargers, car holders and more.
