The Road Ahead: Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note & Galaxy Nexus

This article series looks at the upcoming releases from top smartphone manufacturers, almost all of which are looking like they’ll be released over the next two or three months.

It’s an exciting time to be buying a smartphone, with cool phones like the iPhone 5, the HTC Vigor and the Galaxy Note coming out. Many of these new phones are sporting much wider displays, some of which are capable of 720p, and CPU power is also vastly increasing.

Today, we’ll be looking at Samsung’s upcoming releases: the Samsung Galaxy S III, the Samsung Galaxy Note, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Samsung Galaxy S III Overview

The flagship phone for Samsung, the Galaxy S III has only very recently been mentioned by an anonymous 4chan poster. While it’s far from a trusted source, these rumours are interesting enough that they’re worth a bit of a re-print.

Features:

  • Quad Core 2.0GHz processor
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • 4.65 Super AMOLED III display at 1280 x 1024
  • 10 megapixel camera, 1080p 60fps videos
  • Metal body, 9mm thick
  • 2250mAh battery

Release Date: Unknown

Certainty: 20%

These specs are good; too good. If the SGS III actually does have these specifications, it’ll be even more of a titan than the SGS2 was when it was released. The display is also an odd proportion, a 5:4 ratio that’s uncommon for smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus / Nexus Prime Overview

The Galaxy Nexus or Nexus Prime is the reference model for the next version of Android, called 2.4 or Ice Cream Sandwich. The phone is looking to be a stunner, with a very thin chassis featuring a 720p HD display.

Features:

  • 4.65″ 720p HD display
  • 8.8mm thick
  • Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 2.4)

Release Date: Late October

Certainty: 70%

There’s still a while to go before we’re sure of the naming and the specs of this phone.

Samsung Galaxy Note Overview

This massive smartphone tablet / hybrid looks incredibly powerful, with all of the tech that made the Samsung Galaxy S2 great on a much bigger, 720p+ display. Wow.

Features:

  • 5.3″ 1280×800 Super AMOLED HD display
  • Dual core 1.4GHz
  • 2500mAh battery
  • Integrated stylus

Release Date: 2011

Certainty: 95%

Given that this phone’s already been shown off to the press, we’d be very surprised to see it disappear off the radar. The only mystery is the release date.
