Adonit Writer keyboard case for iPad 2

The Adonit Writer 2 is a folio case for your iPad 2 that combines the protection of a case with an integrated keyboard that connects over Bluetooth. Let’s have a look at how this keyboard case works, and whether it’s the perfect complement to your iPad 2.

Keys Before All Else

If you’re buying a keyboard case for your iPad 2, the first concern is the keyboard. Is it actually any good? Thankfully, the Writer’s keyboard feels quite high quality, with laptop-like scissor keys, and even includes function keys for useful shortcuts like the home button or toggling the on-screen keyboard. Apple shortcuts work too, meaning you can easily use copy and paste when you need to. The keyboard is small (about the size of a netbook’s) but makes the most of the space available. As with other scissor action keyboards, the short key travel means you can type quite quickly, particularly once you get used to the small size.

Magnets: How do they work?

Like all advanced technology, the Adonit Writer 2 uses magnets. Instead of having a fixed upright position like most other folio cases, the Writer uses a magnetic strip to allow a much wider range of positions. This means that instead of just working on a desk, you can use the Writer on a beanbag, in bed, on the train, or wherever else — you’re free to adjust the Writer’s orientation to match your posture, instead of the other way around. It’s also worth noting that each position feels stiff and secure; you won’t be having to constantly adjust and re-adjust the positioning here.

The Writer also uses magnets to attach itself to your iPad 2, keeping it tight and secure. They’re also used to put your iPad and the Writer itself to sleep when you close the case, saving power whenever possible. Speaking of power, the Writer is reported to last approximately one month of heavy use with just three AAA batteries. This is fairly impressive, and the decision to use AAA batteries instead of a rechargeable Lithium Ion makes sense given its long battery life.

This Thing’s A Case Too

As a case, the Writer 2 is quite well designed. While the protection afforded by the slim polyurethane case (and its inbuilt rubber pads)  is effective against scratches only, the case doesn’t add much to the iPad 2’s already slim figure. The iPad 2 feels secure once in the case too, thanks to the magnets at use there. The case also has a nice quick release method, which allows you to disengage the iPad from its shell rather quickly. The only real negative to the case is that it picks up fingerprints easily, which is a shame as it looks quite nice when it’s new.

Adonit score some personal points with me for their environmental choices: The entire assembly can be picked into pieces and recycled, most of the case is made from recycled material, and even the packaging is stripped down to use less resources. While it’s of debatable environmental impact, it’s a nice gesture that should be repeated by other leading manufacturers.

A Worthy Option?

I’d definitely say that the Writer is one of the better iPad 2 keyboard cases available at the moment. While it offers only slim protection, the Writer is a great little package that has been incredibly well thought out and makes a lot of sense. If you’re happy typing on a netbook and want a premium experience for your iPad, then the Writer 2 will be right up your alley. If you’re looking for a less expensive but more robust option, why not have a look at the KeyCase Folio Pro?
