The Pixel Stand 2nd Gen is finally in Mobile Fun’s hands. But is it worth the extra money over a normal wireless charger?
When Google announced that they would be releasing a new Pixel Stand 2nd Gen back in October I was pretty excited, the first Pixel Stand was one of my favorite wireless chargers, and probably still looks one of the best.
However not matter how much of a fan you were of the 1st generation’s looks, the Pixel Stand 2nd Gen certainly looks better in my opinion.
The design is less of a piece of technology and more of a modern air freshener, it’s suppose to blend in with the rest of your home. I think it does a great job of this, however I do think it would be great to get a couple of colour options so you could better match it with your decor.
Now the 1st generation wireless charger supported up to 10W wireless charging, which in this day and age is fairly slow, thankfully Google’s Pixel Stand 2nd Gen offers 23W wireless charging for the Google Pixel 6 Pro and 21W wireless charging for the Google Pixel 6.
If you have another wireless charging phone which is not a pixel, then you are all out of luck. The Google Pixel Stand 2nd Gen will only charge other phones at a maximum of 15W.
It also boasts a nearly silent fan that will keep it and your phone cool while charging, this should in theory, keep your battery healthier and charge your phone quicker, for longer. The fan is supposed to be so quiet that you will still be able to stream, or take video calls without it being picked up by the microphone.
The benefits don’t stop there if you are a Pixel user, as your phone will automatically adjust it’s settings or UI when docked on the charger.
When you dock your phone it can bring up photo frames, or shortcuts to your nest security cameras and can even switch your phone to do not disturb mode at night.
I really like that final idea, as I’m someone that charges their phone next to my bed at night. I like do not disturb mode as it make sure I’m only notified by things I want, rather than your nocturnal friend that thinks it’s acceptable to ping you a message at 2am. While you can set a schedule for do not disturb mode you are not always guaranteed to go to sleep at the same time every night, so this charger just takes the guesswork out of it.
One thing I have to applaud Google for is that they have made the Pixel Stand 2nd Gen from 39% recycled materials, which I think everyone can like as it still feels incredibly premium.
So should you buy one, as they are not a cheap wireless charger?
Overall I think this is a great looking, fairly quick wireless charging stand. However I would only really buy one if I had a Pixel, as that’s where you really get the benefit of the quicker wireless charging and the smart features when docked.
