The Note 8 comes with a pretty cool special ability: you can turn it into a proper desktop PC. Samsung have made a unique dock called DeX, which holds the Note 8 and allows you to connect a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse.
When you have all three connected, you can use your Note 8 like a desktop computer — you can open multiple apps at once, get work done quickly using the mouse and keyboard, and access the desktop versions of websites. Best of all, it’s still your Note 8, so you can still access your apps, data and photos that are on your device. With this dock, you can turn one device into two: a mobile phone and a desktop PC. Pretty cool, right?
The DeX was developed originally for the Galaxy S8, and it works just the same with the Note 8. Reviews of the DeX have been strong, with users praising the productivity that’s possible with this kind of setup. Particularly when you’re using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you get a very compact setup that looks super swish.
Here’s what the desktop looks like once you’ve got the Note 8 connected. You can see that all of your apps are in a menu accessible in the lower left corner, like you would find on Windows. Apps run in their own windows, which can be resized as you like. Samsung have developed their own browser, and you’ll be automatically directed to use the desktop versions of sites you visit.
The DeX Station itself is pretty compact, despite the amount of power you can provide. It’s a small spheroid with all of the connections around the back — HDMI, USB ports, ethernet — and a fan inside to keep your Note 8 (and the DeX itself) cool while it’s working. You can plug in any HDMI display as well, including monitors, TVs and projectors — so no matter what is available, you’ll be sorted!
The DeX is a really useful upgrade for the Note 8, letting you get more done without the need for a desktop PC or laptop. With this dock, you can leave these bigger devices at home and just plug into the dock when you arrive at your destination. We’ve dreamed for years of a single device that can do it all… and the Note 8 with DeX is the closest we’ve come to realising that dream!
