Protect ya screen: the Nintendo Switch’s biggest design flaw

The Switch is a beautiful return to form for Nintendo, but the new console still has a few annoying design flaws — we’re talking about the left Joy-Con controller’s connectivity problems, the lousy kickstand, the abysmal wireless. There’s also one rather more pressing issue, which is this: the Switch’s dock can scratch the screen while charging.

Yup, two pieces of the same console, designed to work together, can actually permanently damage one another — awesome. You wouldn’t have thought that it would be possible to damage a screen so easily in 2017, but Nintendo opted to cover the Switch’s display with plastic instead of glass or sapphire, and that means getting scratches is a real issue.

We’ve seen some ingenuity come out of the perplexing situation though, with gamers reporting that they’re using tea cosies, pantyhose and other soft materials to wrap up the dock and prevent damage to the Switch’s vulnerable screen. Of course, these aren’t ideal long-term solutions, but they’ll do for now.

After all, if the screen on the go-anywhere console can be easily damaged by the plastic dock, it can be damaged by pretty much any other common hazard too — keys, sand, even other devices that come into unexpected contact with the display.

The Olixar screen protector for the Nintendo Switch is available for pre-order now, and should arrive soon in the UK. It’s made out of tempered glass, so it’ll add long-lasting protection to your new games console and be easy to install too.
