The iPhone 7 Plus has long been the neglected older brother of the upcoming iPhone models. While the smaller iPhone sizzles under the weight of media attention, leaks of the (far more exciting) Plus model have been few and far between. Now the balance has been redressed, with the release of this tantalising photo.
iPhone 7 Plus with refined dual rear camera
The photo, sourced by 9to5Mac, shows the iPhone 7 Plus in Silver (twice) and Rose Gold (once), alongside an iPhone 7 in Rose Gold. Early photo leaks of the iPhone 7 Plus sported unlikely-looking and bulbous protuberances for the dual rear camera, but this new design looks much more refined.
The dual cameras are merged into a single lozenge-shaped cutout, which protrudes less than the iPhone 7’s single camera does and clearly shows two lenses within. Combined with the redirected antenna lines, the design feels a lot cleaner than both the iPhone 6S Plus and the iPhone 7.
Unfortunately, one rumoured feature for the iPhone 7 Plus remains a mystery: will it have a smart connector like the iPad Pro? These photos don’t show that area of the phone, so the question remains up in the air. There are decent arguments both for and against the inclusion of the connector, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until Apple’s September unveiling before we know for sure. If it is present, iPhone 7 Plus cases will be interesting…
A third option?
One intriguing possibility is that Apple will prepare not two but three iPhones for a reveal in September: the iPhone 7, 7 Plus and 7 Pro. According to NowhereElse.fr, the Californian company will bring the Smart Connector and the dual rear camera only to the Pro model, explaining why some 5.5-inch leaks have had the Smart Connector and dual rear cameras, and others have not. They published these photo to support their theory.
It’s an incredibly exciting possibility, although believers in a simpler Apple product lineup will no doubt be dismayed — we’ve come a long way from the halcyon days where there was one iPhone, one iPad and that was it. Of course, there’s also the distinct possibility that the iPhone Pro is a fake, a cancelled prototype or both.
