Move over Google’s driverless cars. BMW knows, that although we may like the idea of browsing on our phones, sipping coffee whilst our car autonomously transports us to our destination (albeit with the slight risk of crashing into a bus)  – we also quite like driving. And if we’re driving a fast, supersonic chariot of the future, well all the better!

The VISION NEXT 100 is BMW’s concept car of the future. It was unveiled as part of their 100 year anniversary and provides a real look into the future of car technology.

The BMW VISION NEXT 100 will tour the world, arriving in London in June 2016 and the USA in Oct 2016, so you’ll be able to see it in the flesh. But if you can’t wait that long here’s a more detailed look at the car in all its glory:

Driving

With Boost and Ease Mode you can decide how you want the car to travel.

Boost Mode puts you behind the wheel, so you can control the car yourself, but in a fully customised experience, where everything revolves around you as the driver. The Head-Up Display provides augmented content on your windscreen – road conditions, navigation instructions, acceleration tips – improving performance and increasing safety.

Ease Mode, which is basically driverless mode, puts the car in charge so you can sit back and do other things while driving is fully automated. The Head-Up Display, instead of offering driving tips, informs you of nearby places of interest.

The interior

When in Boost Mode all you need to do is touch the BMW logo on the dashboard – and the vehicle systems are activated, the door closes, the interior panels extend the shape of your seat and the F1-style steering wheel folds out from the dashboard. Preparing you for the ultimate driving experience.

In Ease Mode the car’s Smart materials will transform its interior into a relaxation zone – expect plenty of warm colours and cashmere – if that’s your thing, if not, you can mix it up to suit. The headrests move to one side and passengers can easily turn around and talk to each other. So whether you want to socialise or do a bit of office work, the BMW VISION NEXT 100 creates an environment to suit your needs.

The exterior

One of the first things to strike you about the BMW VISION NEXT 100’s exterior are its wheels. It features intelligent wheel arches that sync with the wheels as the car maneuvers. It’s an innovative concept that moves away from focusing on static design elements to looking at the car as a series of moving forms. What’s more, BMW is looking to use 4D printing to manufacture the wheel arches – a potential revolution in the way we produce material.cq5dam.resized.img.1680.large.time1457363662972
