Fix the new MacBook with the Satechi USB-C hub

Satechi USB Type-C Hub with USB Charging Ports

The new MacBook is awesome — super slim, a beautiful screen, and it’s not even that slow. But it does have an issue: apart from the 3.5mm audio jack, there’s only one port: a single USB-C. That means you can’t charge your laptop and connect any wired device at the same time. That’s kind of crazy, so Satechi have stepped in with a solution: the USB-C Hub, which attaches seamlessly to your new MacBook’s singular port, and provides a bunch of extra ports, card slots, and even another USB-C port. Awesome.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s added with the Satechi hub. First of all, there’s a direct passthrough of the USB-C connection, so you can continue to charge your new MacBook as normal using the adapter that came in the box. You could also use it to connect to other USB-C devices, like recent Nexus phones or even another new MacBook.

Next, there are two USB 2.0 ports. These are perfect for existing peripherals like keyboards, mice, gamepads, but also find use with external disc drives, USB storage drives, printers and more. Of course, your iPhone also uses a normal USB port to connect to your PC, which is quite an important inclusion.

Finally, there are two card readers. The first is for SD cards (the most popular format for DSLRs and other larger cameras / video cameras), and the second is for micro SD cards (which are of course popular in smaller gadgets like smartphones, tablets, action cams and drones).

With these five elements in place, you regain the functionality of earlier MacBooks, without giving up the unique advantages of USB-C. The Satechi hub is lightweight and portable too, so it’s easy to leave it in your bag when it’s not needed. You can even use it with other USB-C devices, if you wanted to. Pretty cool, right?
