Latest iPhone 6S leaks show thicker body, Force Touch module

This weekend saw a couple of interesting leaks of the upcoming iPhone 6S. The phone was pictured in CAD renders in addition to a photo purportedly from an iPhone production line. Let’s take a look at each in greater detail, and see what additional information we can glean from them.

First let’s take a look at that production line shot. The photo seems to show a display panel of the upcoming iPhone. The overall layout seems to be quite similar to the current iPhone 6, but there’s one difference – a rectangular cutout near the centre of the shot. This is thought to be the Force Touch module, which was first included in the Apple Watch and is now rumoured to be in the iPhone 6S. The “Taptic Engine” module should allow the screen to register the amount of force of each tap, allowing it to differentiate between a normal tap and a harder “Force Tap”. That unlocks the door to advanced functionality, like looking up the definition of a word or scrubbing faster through video footage.

Next we have the CAD drawings, which suggest that Apple is making their latest smartphones a little bit thicker than their predecessors – 7.1mm compared to 6.9mm for the iPhone 6 and 7.3mm compared to 7.1mm for the iPhone 6 Plus. 9to5Mac have suggested a number of potential reasons that this could be the case, including the inclusion of Force Touch, a larger battery or a stronger shell. This extra width might necessitate buying a new iPhone 6S case if you’re moving from the iPhone 6 to the thicker model.

The changes are interesting, and I’m sure we’ll see some more before Apple unveil their smartphones in September. What are you looking forward to?
