The next Nexus: rumour roundup

The next Nexus. It’s a topic on the minds of many Google geeks, given the size and expense of the latest model, the Nexus 6. Over the past few weeks we’ve heard some interesting rumours about what’s to come, so take a look!

Two new Nexus phones

Android Police are reporting that Google will launch not one but two new Nexus phones in 2015. Both phones come with the standard aquatic codenames, and are made by two different companies.

The first is the LG Bullhead. The phone is set to have a 5.2-inch display and a 2700 mAh battery; both counts lower than the Nexus 6. The phone would include a Snapdragon 808 processor, which is a hexa-core chip that sits between the Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 805 in terms of performance and cost. That would make sense for an affordable Nexus device.

The second phone is the Huawei Angler, which will have a larger 5.7-inch display (making it more of a phablet, like the Nexus 6). The phone would include a Snapdragon 810 processor, making it more powerful than its younger brother (and indeed the Nexus 6, with its Snapdragon 805). The battery capacity of the Angler is very high at 3500 mAh, which would make for a solid two days of battery life assuming there are no other massively demanding features included.

Both phones would be released in October, in accordance with the standard Nexus timetable. This timeframe is used because it’s away from the usual May and September busy periods (e.g. iPhone, Galaxy S, Galaxy Note) and Google is able to use what is then slightly cheaper hardware that’s still part of the most recent generation.

A new Nexus 5?

Google stoked some rumours of a return to the Nexus 5 by showing this image, which looks like a modern version with USB Type C support.

Still, it’s likely that this is just a modified render of the phone, and given its prominence in Google’s presentation it’s unlikely that an errant Google staffer mistakenly leaked the phone… but we can always hope, right?

Conclusion

So there we have it – two Nexus phones on the way, and what’s probably not a hint from Google that they’re bringing back the Nexus 5. Probably.
