The Verge’s Best CES 2015 Wearable is coming to Mobile Fun

Wearables were the toast of CES 2014, but this year the more mature technology was less ubiquitous. The most impressive smartwatch of the show this year was the Withings Activité Pop, and it’s coming soon to Mobile Fun. Let’s take a closer look to see what makes this wearable so special.

Unlike most smartwatches, the Activité Pop begins with a traditional analogue watch; there’s no LCD display, no oversized buttons, nothing that immediately gives the game away. Instead, the Pop just looks like a stylish watch, wrought of PVD-coated metal and a silicone strap. The colour choices are a bit different than some watches – dark gray, blue and ‘wild sand’ – but the overall effect is quite normal.

It’s only when you take a closer look that the smarts become more apparent. The Activité Pop is a fitness tracker, with a dial the slowly fills throughout the day as you meet your activity goals. The Pop sends its tracking information – sleep, steps, swimming – to your iPhone or Android phone using Bluetooth Low Energy, letting you get all of the same exciting coloured graphs as you’d get from other smartwatches or fitness trackers.

But as you don’t have any digital displays on the watch, you reap the benefits of massive battery life: Up to eight months using a standard digital watch battery, which is brilliant. It also makes it easy for Withings to provide other standard watch features, like water resistance up to 30 metres.

The Withings Activité Pop is a fresh, clever take on the smartwatch formula, and it’s no surprise that The Verge awarded it their Best Wearable Award this year.
