Google IO 2014 SmartWatches

Expectations were high for a new version of Android and a strong focus on wearable technology at the Google IO Developer Conference – they didn’t disappoint!  The keynote session offered an opportunity to compare fierce rivals’ releases in wearable gadgets, some of which we will discuss in this article.  One of the first Android Wear SmartWatches, the LG G Watch which made its debut at Google IO, will be the first SmartWatch to launch featuring the new software, alongside the Motorola Moto 360 and the Samsung Gear Live.

The LG G Watch

Available in both Black Titan and White Gold, the LG G Watch has been specifically chosen by Google as a lead partner on Android Wear.  Ready to pre-order already, this SmartWatch will be available to ship on July 4th, ready for the official launch date of July 7th.  Setting you back just £159, rumoured to be the cheapest of this trio, you won’t be able to resist this wearable hands-on gadget with all-exciting features, including a “speak-and-go” function, coupled with being IP67 dust and water resistant.  This SmartWatch will be compatible with a “wide range of Android Smartphones”, not solely LG’s offerings.

The Motorola Moto 360

The Motorola Moto 360 SmartWatch ditches the square-shaped display featured on many other wearables on the market in favour of a seamless circular watch face for a more sophisticated look.  Rumoured to be released during summer 2014, the price is yet to be confirmed.  Its classic design is that of a handcrafted timepiece, whilst having the modern day functionality of a top of the range SmartWatch. With its customisable leather and metal straps and innovative design, the Moto 360 is shaping up to be Google’s equivalent to the inevitable Apple iWatch, especially as out of this trio, the Moto 360 has 32GB internal storage, compared to 4GB – let’s just hope it arrives in good time!

The Samsung Gear Live

Samsung’s Gear Live will be available for pre-order later today, ready to ship on July 7th.  Given Samsung’s previous criticism for comparatively expensive SmartWatches, the Gear Live is rumoured to be launched at £169.  Available in Black or Wine Red with a changeable strap, inclusive heart rate monitor and resistance to dust and water, this inventive gadget can be customised to suit your style and support your fitness activity.

As flagship Android phones increase in popularity, it’ll be nice to have a selection of wearable gadgets to carry out your day-to-day tasks without having to take your phone out your pocket.  So there we have it folks; three new and exciting upcoming launches to look out for over the summer – watch this space!
