Smartwatches were the must-have accessories of CES 2014, with dozens of companies announcing new models. These watches ranged from dedicated computing devices that happened to be wrist-mounted (like the Galaxy Gear), more middle-of-the-road options like the Pebble Steel, and traditional wristwatches with smart additions – like the watches I’m about to show you.
These are the Cogito Pop (left) and Cogito Original (centre, right), two models of analogue smartwatches from ConnecteDevice. The idea behind these watches is to provide a traditional high-end analogue watch experience – with the traditional face and dial – while adding smartphone notifications to the background via LED icons or bleeps. This approach means you get a perfectly ordinary looking wristwatch with a long battery life and water resistance, but you still get that smart connection to your phone so you can see incoming calls, emails, texts, calendar events and battery alerts.
That battery life is super impressive too, at one year – a far cry from the couple of days of some other smartwatches! The watches are compatible with Android 4.3+ and iOS 7 devices, as the watch relies on Bluetooth 4.0+ LE support to attain its longevity.
So what’s the difference between the two models? Well, the Pop has a more modern design, while the Original is more classical in its approach. The two models share the majority of their features, but the Original also includes Caller ID and the ability to mute incoming calls.
The Cogito Pop is the cheaper of the two series, and will be released earlier – a February release is expected in the US, although a UK launch date has yet to be confirmed. The Cogito Original will be released in mid-March. Both watches should be in the low triple digits in terms of price, making them a good deal cheaper than most other smartwatches on the market.
