The Otterbox Commuter has been announced for the iPhone 5C. The Commuter is one of our favourite cases for any phone, so it’s great to see Otterbox providing a case just for the new iPhone 5C.
So why is the Commuter Series so valued? Well, it’s a case that combines excellent protection with minimal bulk. As the size of the case increases it typically offers more raw protection from drops and knocks, but also gets harder to fit in your pocket as its dimensions and weight increase. Otterbox have done really well to get a best of both worlds scenario, balancing size and protective ability for a case that feels not much bigger than a typical low-protection silicone case, but still provides much improved resistance to impacts and falls.
A lot of that is down to the Commuter’s design – instead of being a single layer of silicone, it’s actually a layer of silicone wrapped in a polycarbonate outer shell. That improves both rigidity and scratch protection, as well as being a more weight-efficient way of attaining good drop protection.
The Commuter also includes a tertiary layer – a screen protector – in the box. This ensures that you don’t need to remember to buy a screen protector yourself, and you’ll always have that protection against scratches and scuffs installed.
