iPhone 5C: The three Cs of Apple’s new phone

Apple took the stage in Cupertino, unveiling two new iPhone models that will replace the iPhone 5: the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S. The new iPhones will run iOS 7 and will be released on September 20th.

In this two-part series, we’ll take a look at each of these phones, beginning with the iPhone 5C.

C is for Colourful

The iPhone 5C is a “more fun, more colourful” iPhone that comes in five colours: green, white, blue, pink and yellow. The back and sides are made from a single piece of polycarbonate, with a metal inset inside that’s used as an antenna.

The iPhone 5C’s colours can be further customised with the application of cases and covers. As well as the many third-party cases available for the iPhone 5C, Apple are also releasing a series of silicone cases with circular cutouts. These show the colour of the 5C below in an interesting way.

C is for Capable

Inside, the iPhone 5C is surprisingly capable. While the iPhone 5C was rumoured to be a more mid-range device, the phone has the same hardware as the iPhone 5. That includes the 4-inch Retina display, the A6 processor and the 8 megapixel camera.

There’s also even an improvement over the iPhone 5, as the front-facing FaceTime HD camera has seen an upgrade with larger pixels and improved BSI optics. Wireless communication options are also better, with dual-band Wi-Fi and reportedly the most LTE bands of any smartphone.

C is for Costly

The iPhone 5C will be available from £469 sim-free for the 16 GB model, moving to £549 for the 32 GB model. This price is definitely still at the upper end of the mobile market, although cheaper than past iPhone models. Contract pricing is expected to be the same as current iPhone 4S contract pricing, but hasn’t yet been announced by UK carriers.

The phone will go on pre-order on the 13th of September, this Friday, and will be begin arriving at Apple stores and to pre-order customers one week later, on the 20th.
