Sony SmartWatch 2 delayed until September

The Sony Smartwatch 2, which we covered earlier this month, has sadly been delayed until September 9th worldwide. Sony has not given a reason for the two month delay, although design or supply issues are the most likely causes. The SmartWatch 2 was last spotted at a press event in June, but some of its features – including its user interface – have not yet been detailed.

The timing is unfortunate for Sony, as the company would have been able to be the first major company to come out with a second generation smart watch product, before other players like Microsoft, Samsung, Google or Apple had even released their own first generations of smart watches. Now, these competitors (and smaller players like Pebble) will be able to have more time to produce and potentially even release their own designs.

The SmartWatch 2 is certainly going to be a convincing upgrade over the first generation SmartWatch model, even with its delay. The new watch utilises a larger screen and smaller bezel, making for a more stylish looking phone that should be a bit more readable in direct sunlight as well.

The SmartWatch 2 should also be a little easier to use than its predecessor, with NFC capabilities allowing for one touch pairing with NFC-capable Android smartphones. The three Android-style buttons running below the display should also make the interface easier to navigate than on the initial model.

Finally, the Sony SmartWatch 2 also boasts an improved battery life, which should allow for three or four full days of use between recharges. The proprietary charging cable has also been exchanged for a much more standard micro USB lead.

What do you make of the Sony SmartWatch 2 – do you reckon it will still be competitive when it launches in September? Let me know in the comments below and feel free to share your questions there as well. Thanks for reading the article and have a good afternoon!
