HTC Desire S in stock from today – the Desire just got more desirable

The number of HTC Desire spin-offs seems to be getting quite ridiculous lately, what with the Desire HD, Desire Z and now the Desire S – not to mention the rumoured Desire HD2, a device which sounds so stonkingly good that it may well be set to wipe all others off the map later in the year!

If you don’t fancy waiting for the Desire HD2, though, the SIM free Desire S looks like a fantastic handset.  It’s being touted as an evolved version of the Desire, and given that the Desire was HTC’s flagship phone of 2010 and not exactly puny itself in terms of power, that’s really saying something.

So how does it differ from the original Desire?  Well, for starters, it’s lighter and smaller, featuring a slimmer and stronger unibody design.  HTC have basically taken the Desire and made it even more desirable.

It’s also got a heightened sense of speed and clarity, with a faster GPU, more RAM and more internal storage space (a whopping 1.1GB).  All of that, on top of the 1GHz Snapdragon processor, makes the Desire S a force to be reckoned with.

The most obvious aesthetic difference is the addition of a front-facing camera; up until now, one of the major edges that the iPhone 4 held over the Desire.  That takes video-calling and self-portraiture to a new level (how many times have you had to take a picture of yourself by just pointing and clicking blindly?! Or…perhaps that’s just me…)

It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, of course, and has a huge 3.7-inch touchscreen (if you want even bigger than that, you’re better off with the Desire HD).  You can grab an HTC Desire S screen protector for it over on the main site, along with a range of other accessories.
