New Handset Releases: July to September

What a manic month June was! Although dominated by iPhone 4, there were a number of high profile handsets that made their way onto the shelves including the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Wave and Sony Ericsson X10 Mini.

Over the next few months we’ve got some great new handsets due to make an appearance and not only will we have a full blown handset war on our hands, but also a battle for the number one operating system too.

There seems to be no stopping Google’s Android operating system at the moment, with most handset manufacturers now offering at least one smartphone running Google’s operating system. The latest version, 2.2 has just been released to developers and handset manufacturers – this is great news for existing Android owners as they’ll get new features, but it also means that there will be new hardware coming to take advantage of the new OS.

With touch screen fast becoming the new standard way to interact with your phone, Samsung decided to give their ageing TouchWiz interface an overhaul. TouchWiz lives on in their standard handsets, but future touchscreen phones are set to use Bada, Samsung’s new finger controlled touch based OS. The Samsung Wave will be the first phone to run the new OS as well as feature a gorgeous Super AMOLED screen.

Poor old Nokia. They might still have the biggest market share, but they’re losing the fight against Apple and Android. The N8 is their next scheduled smartphone and will be running the latest version of the Symbian software. The Nokia N8 is the first handset to run the new operating system,  and will also be the last N-Series phone that runs Symbian Software as Nokia have decided to use the Meego platform on all N-Series going forward.

Microsoft are still playing catch-up, but their new Windows Phone 7 software is getting really close to it’s promised release date. The menu system looks great, but we’ve still not seen any handsets that will run Windows Phone 7. The latest rumours suggest that both HTC and LG will be amongst the first to release Windows Phone 7 handsets.
