Crazy-big (6.4-inch) Xiaomi MiMax announced

Xiaomi announced the MiMax today, a few days after the phone was leaked by a Chinese government agency. The phone is something of a curiosity, with a titanic 6.4-inch screen yet a super-slim 7.5mm metal body.

Xiaomi claim that the phone is small enough to fit into the front pocket of your jeans, but it’s hard to shake the feeling they’ve sourced a super-large pair of trousers for their press photo. Still, with a bigger screen you get a better experience watching videos, surfing the web and reading books, so it’s not hard to see why the Chinese company would try a phone that really maximises the screen size metric.

Internally, the phone has slightly better than average specifications. You’ll find a mid-range Snapdragon 650 or 652 processor powering things, but this is backed with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage. The battery is unsurprisingly capacious, at 4850mAh. The optics are also impressive, with a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facer.

In terms of features, you can expect the usual range of recent innovations: a fingerprint sensor, Android 6 (under Xiaomi’s MI8 skin), a hybrid SIM tray (allowing either dual-SIM or SIM and Micro SD configurations) and LTE support.

The phone will be released in China on May 17th, and may yet see a European or American release as well. It’ll be available in the standard trio of colours: silver, gold and dark grey — no rose gold yet.
