In just a few hours, the new Star Wars film will debut in the UK, introducing a host of new characters and amazing locations to the global fanbase. But before we move onto a new world, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the undisputed hero of Star Wars, from Episodes I to XI: R2-D2.

This plucky drone accomplished so much, from bringing the Death Star plans to Luke in Episode IV to (literally) flying around and saving everyone in Episode III. Now, a fan of the whistling droid has created the ultimate tribute: a proper R2-D2 drone?—?that can fly.

The R2-D2 drone was created by Don Melara and the company Air Cam Shots, over an eight day period. The drone comes with a moving head, LED underglow effects, and of course a speaker to provide the droid’s trademark whistles, clicks and beeps.

It’s built around a DJI Phantom?—?another well-known white drone—and uses its avionics and control systems to get around. Its tubular body probably doesn’t fly quite as well as a standard Phantom, but any movement at all looks incredible.

The R2-D2 drone was a big hit at the International Drone Expo in LA last week, and looking at the videos it’s easy to see why.
