Samsung announced one of its biggest smartphones ever this week, the six-inch Galaxy A9. The smartphone is a mid-range phone at a considerable scale, which could be a winning combination for price-conscious consumers.

The metal phone is dominated by its half-foot-long 1080p Super AMOLED display, which features the same 2.5D curved glass as the Galaxy S6. The front of the phone also has an 8-megapixel camera, with a wide angle lens, and a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button. Of course, there’s also a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilisation and a wide f/1.9 aperture.

Internally, the Galaxy A9 also impresses. The 7.4mm frame contains a massive 4,000mAh battery, which powers an octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor. This is backed with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Of course for a budget model, a micro SD card slot is included to expand this storage further. The phone runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, making it just one revision behind the latest official release.

The Galaxy A9 goes on sale in China before the new year, although pricing has yet to be nailed down. The device should be available in Europe through the usual grey market channels, but should additionally see an official release in 2016. It sits above previously announced Galaxy A series phones, the 5.2-inch A5 and the 5.5-inch A7.
