Good news for OnePlus X owners: better Micro SD card support is coming

OnePlus announced today that they would be improving Micro SD card support for the OnePlus X, their most recent phone and the first in their history to offer a Micro SD card slot. This improvement comes via an update to Oxygen OS, which adds support for quite a few new features.

First off, the exFAT file system is supported for the first time. exFAT a more modern alternative to FAT32 that’s well-supported by both Mac OS X and Windows, so it’s a nice choice for Micro SD cards that are going into other devices than your phone (and some cards arrive with the format by default).

The update also eliminates the need to reboot every time you insert a Micro SD card, which will no doubt save a lot of time when you’re swapping between two cards or copying media onto your PC.

Probably the most important new feature is the ability to move apps to the SD card and run them from there. That’s a critical part of making 16GB phones like the OnePlus X more usable, and will definitely be appreciated by fans of mobile games or other space-heavy apps.

It’s clear that OnePlus didn’t quite grasp the utility that users expected, but the update should go a long way towards making using Micro SD cards with the OnePlus X more intuitive.

The changes are being released now to a limited amount of OnePlus X owners as an OTA (over the air) update. If no show-stopping bugs are found, the update will see a general release over the next couple of days.
