OnePlus X announced

unnamed

The OnePlus X was announced today; the second phone this year from OnePlus and their third overall. The new phone is smaller and cheaper than its predecessors, with a 5-inch AMOLED display and £199 price point, but it still retains the company’s signature look and near-stock Android.

The phone comes in two different configurations, but unlike previous phones you get a choice of materials rather than internal hardware. There is a limited edition Ceramic model, made from zirconia, or a dark glass model called Onyx. The overall look is similar to Sony’s Xperia handsets, although there’s no waterproofing as you’d expect on a Sony model. The phone includes an alert slider like the OnePlus 2, allowing you to swift between receiving all notifications, just important ones or none at all.

Inside, the OnePlus X is about as powerful as last year’s OnePlus One, with a few exceptions. The processor is the same, the popular Snapdragon 801, backed with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. The battery is smaller too, at 2525mAh. The camera lacks the OIS of the OnePlus 2, but includes a better front-facing camera than either model. For charging, the OPX uses the more familiar Micro USB port rather than the USB-C we saw on the OnePlus 2. Overall then, a mix of both previous models, sitting somewhere between the two in terms of overall performance.

The phone comes with OxygenOS, based on stock Android 5.1.1. An upgrade to Android 6.0 has been promised, but no date for this release has yet been announced.

As usual, the phone will be supported by OnePlus and third-party manufacturers with a range of cases and accessories. You can see our full range of OnePlus X cases and accessories via the button below.
